5 Reasons Why Miley Cyrus Hosting the VMAs Will Be A Hot Mess!

Miley Cyrus is this Year’s VMAs host. Is she going to be a hit or a miss?

As MTV’s annual VMAs approach, I thought it could be fun to do a little post about this year’s host, Miley Cyrus. Some of you may have heard of her… Hannah Montana? Twerking? Freaky tongue-posing? No? OK then…

Miley6Over the course of her 10-year career, Miley has grown up in front of our eyes, from sweet and innocent Disney child star to rebellious, ‘vegan nudist’ pop sensation. Right now, she appears to be on the cusp of releasing new music, so she’s been popping up more and more on our screens and in the press. To kick off this new era, she’s going to be hosting the VMAs, in what’s sure to be a make or break moment for her.

Though some people aren’t very confident in her ability to pull off a gig like this, I’m rooting for her, and believe she has what it takes. It all comes down to these 5 things:

She Doesn’t Care What You Think

Miley1You could be singing her praises for days on end, or you can be using up all your 140 twitter characters to hurl abuse at her, I genuinely believe that it doesn’t phase her. Which can be a good thing for this show! If she’s not afraid to fall flat or take risks, then hopefully she can be more experimental and try something different.

She Isn’t Afraid To Be Shady

Miley5Just 3 days before the VMAs, she’s already made some remarks about her peers that are ruffling a few feathers. When asked about Nicki Minaj and her beef with both MTV and Taylor Swift about Anaconda’s Video of the Year snub, she was very candid and even called out Nicki Minaj, saying she’s ‘not very polite’. But don’t worry, if you think this means she is Team Taylor, think again! In another interview she had already branded T-Swizzle’s Bad Blood video too ‘violent’, as well as criticizing her views on streaming services. Miley is one shady lady!

She’s VMA Royalty

Miley3In 2013, Miley cemented herself in the VMAs Hall of Fame with THAT performance. After Britney’s numerous iconic performances (including that one trainwreck in ’07), Miley’s foam finger, creepy onesie and wandering tongue make up one of the most memorable moments in the award show’s history. It kept people talking for days, weeks and possibly months. Buzz like that is hard not only to achieve, but to maintain, and she did it all while looking like a bit of an idiot!

She’s Just Like You

Miley4I know, you probably don’t have millions in the bank and you aren’t Hannah Montana! What I mean by that is that she reminds me of myself when I was ‘coming of age’. I wanted to dress differently or try different things and be a little crazy and spontaneous. I didn’t take it to the extremes that she did, but it’s definitely endearing to see this extraordinary person go through something so normal. If she’s anything like me, in a few years she will look back at old pictures/videos and want to die of embarrassment. But she’s alright with it now, which leads me to my last point…

She’s Just Being Miley

Miley2She’s experimenting. She’s acting like a fool. She’s dressing like a fool. But she’s just being Miley. In a recent interview with Jimmy Kimmel, when asked what her dad thought of her being naked all the time, she said he’d rather she be naked and a good person, rather than fully clothed and a bitch. And I have to agree. Sometimes she can be a bit much, but for the most part she is still that southern girl with funny charm and a lovable personality. I don’t necessarily like her when she’s ‘turnt up’, but I can’t argue that it’s not entertaining!

Whether you want to see her fail, or you worship the ground she walks on, make sure you tune in to the MTV VMAs on Sunday night (in the US) and Monday night (in the UK) to see just how much of a hot mess Miley Cyrus can be!

A Birthday Meltdown! Turning 25!

It’s my birthday and I’ll cry if I want to!

bdayIt’s funny isn’t it? Age really is just a number, and about 364 days of the year it doesn’t bother me in the slightest. But on my birthday it feels like one of those race-against-time missions, where I have to cut either the blue wire or the red wire before time runs out. No matter which wire I choose though, it never feels like it was the right one! I’m sorry to break it to you (and myself), but I’m no James Bond. And my mission isn’t to save the world. If only it were that simple! It’s a life-long mission, where I have to do all the right things, and have all the right things, at the right times and in the right places. I would prefer to cut the wires to be honest!

In a generation when everyone is trying to one-up each other on social media, I feel like I am constantly behind. Yes I am happily married, but my friend from school is married and expecting her second child. And my co-worker is buying a house. And my next door neighbour is going travelling to Australia. No matter what I accomplish, there is always someone who has beaten me to the punch and knocked a few teeth out too.

If I allow myself, I can quite easily fall into a bottomless pit of self-deprecation and anxiety. All it takes is a few scrolls through my Facebook news feed. The baby announcements and wedding photos are enough to get there in 60 seconds flat. Don’t get me wrong, I like to post things about my relationship every now and then, but most of the time I just avoid it, because I don’t want to come across as a show off or attention seeker.

bday4  bday5

I think that the majority of what we see on Facebook is an illusion. It’s the perfect life that people are desperately seeking. A life of holidays and romances and extravagant purchases that they can only really obtain a fraction of. No one live-tweets the day-to-day arguments with their other half, or Instagram’s their credit card statement showing just how much in debt they are. And why would they? A magician doesn’t reveal his tricks!

When I start to feel a bit panicky about my achievements (or lack of achievements), I evaluate the things that I have accomplished in the real world. The things that you won’t find on my Facebook page. Like the smile my husband greets me with when I come home from work. Or the wonderful sleep I get after a long day of juggling work and home life.

I may not be on time when it comes to my career or my financial status, and I may not be anywhere near ready to take my first steps on the property ladder, but at the end of the day I am very fulfilled in my life. I have a handful of great friends and family I can trust and rely on. I am in a stable job that I enjoy. I have a place to rest my head at night and someone I love very much to share that space with.

bday2bday3

So as far as my quarter-life crisis is concerned, when I’m having a bad day I do just need to shake it off, because without having to try very hard, I can find many things to be thankful for and many achievements to be proud of. Getting a year older always reminds me of my mortality, but that doesn’t need to be a bad thing. A little bit of self-awareness is necessary for us to push ourselves harder to get to where we want to be. And if it’s not the right time for us to get there, why not enjoy the scenery while waiting for that red light to turn green?

#ManCrushMonday: Adam Levine

Maroon 5’s front man has become this weeks #MCM. Find out why…

Adam5This summer is definitely going to hurt like a motherf****r… All thanks to Adam Levine! Yes, Adam is this week’s addition to my ever-growing man crush Monday collection!

Where last week’s Chris Pratt was the American dreamboy, Adam Levine falls somewhere on the opposite end of the spectrum. He has an infamous reputation for being a douche and a man-slut (although now he’s married that has hopefully changed). And his skinny frame and tatted arms wouldn’t necessarily make him leading man material, but there is definitely something exciting about him! Despite his (inadvertent) unlike-ability, you still can’t help but feel a tingle when you see him. Here’s why:

His Eyes

1CE194DC

There is much to be said without uttering a single word, and Adam Levine has definitely mastered the art of eye-talk.

His Talent

Adam6

He may have a reputation for promiscuity, but when you listen to his songs he makes you feel like you’re the only person he’s ever loved! A strong singer and a talented songwriter, his musical storytelling is heavy on the romantic side, making him irresistibly charming.

His Bad Boy Image

Adam4

Everyone loves a bad boy (even if they won’t admit it!). I can imagine him being the kind of guy you couldn’t take home to meet your family without getting a few disapproving looks! The tattoos are a big turn on too…

Fun Facts About Adam LevineAdam2

  • In 2011, Adam Levine stripped naked for Cosmopolitan UK to raise awareness for testicular cancer. Nothing but two manicured hands to keep his modesty protected!
  • Not really a fun fact, but still a fact: Adam suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Adam was voted People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2013.
  • His high school years were spent at Brentwood School, in LA, where he was friends with Jason Segel from How I Met Your Mother.
  • Adam has a cute, gay brother!
  • When he was single, Jennifer Love Hewitt made a public plea for his attention on Ellen. He politely declined, and described her as ‘aggressive’. (Ouch!)

And because this post CLEARLY doesn’t have enough nudity from Adam:

Cooling Down or Freezing Out?! Knowing When to End an Argument…

Are you really just cooling off after the argument, or are you giving the cold shoulder for days on end?

I am absolutely no expert in relationships or making them work! Whenever I give people advice, I always hate to come across like a know-it-all or as if I feel superior, because I believe that every relationship is unique, and what works in mine isn’t guaranteed to work in yours. This post is about something that happened in my relationship earlier this week. Ironically, it was a situation in which I didn’t follow my own advice!

Kim confused
My husband has recently started a new job, which I am very happy about! (get that money, honey!) I’m glad that he is finally in a situation to make new friends and experience a little bit of what the city has to offer. He’s now working in a busy station in London, which is his first job here in the country (we recently relocated from Brazil).

On his first day at his new job, I was very worried about how he was getting on, with the language barrier and even just being able to get around London. He knows suburbia like the back of his hand by now, but London is foreign territory. I was hoping to get some texts from him to let me know when he would be home, if he got lost etc. Long story short, there was a lack of communication on his part, and overprotective instincts on mine.

giphy (3)Instead of discussing it with him, I had been advised to talk to him about it another time, so as not to ruin his first day (“he probably just got caught up in the excitement”). I tried to follow that advice… Big mistake! I am not a person who can hide how I’m feeling. I have the face of a slapped arse when I’m pissed off and everyone knows it. So when he got home, and saw my face, he asked what was wrong.

“I don’t want to get into an argument. We can talk about it tomorrow.” and what ensued was one of our worst arguments in a long time. In trying to put off the discussion, I unintentionally created an even bigger situation! We argued, and then stopped talking altogether, and then argued some more, and then we went to bed without speaking. There was an unresolved storm gathering over our heads, causing a horribly sleepless night.
giphy (5)The next morning, we tried to speak before going to work, but time was short, and things were still frosty when we went our separate ways. Eventually, we made our peace like many 21st Century couples, through Facebook (on Messenger though, not on our public feed!). And that evening we were able to sit down and actually have a civilized conversation.

The whole situation could probably have been avoided, had we just discussed what was going on. Roni hates it when there’s something wrong and I don’t want to talk about it or tell him what it is. My coping mechanism is to just close myself off and not deal with it. It’s an instinct that I am constantly fighting. We’ve had many conversations about it and try hard not to go to bed angry. Things had been doing really well, but sometimes if we don’t think through our actions and their consequences, mistakes can happen. We’re only human!

giphy (1)It’s never easy to air out negative feelings and emotions, and that’s why I used to run away from them. But the truth is, when we talk it out, listen and try to reach common ground, however hard it is to get to, it doesn’t have to prolong the struggle. You’re going to have to face the problem at some point! I would never want to get to the point where we give each other the silent treatment for days, weeks or months even. I guess sometimes it can be good to give yourself some time to cool off, but wait too long and you start to get frostbite.

RE-VIEWED: Saved By The Bell

A walk down memory lane with this teen sitcom classic…

As my 25th birthday draws near (one week and counting) I find myself going through a quarter-life crisis! How can it be that so much time has gone!? (I might be prone to being a little bit mellow-dramatic, if you haven’t noticed). In a last ditch effort to reclaim my youth, I bought myself an early birthday present. On a nostalgic whim, I found myself walking out of HMV with the complete Saved By The Bell collection.

SBTB1Luckily, I am not old enough to have been around when this was first broadcast in the late 80’s/early 90’s. However, when my family first invested in a cable TV service back in 1999, and I came across Nickelodeon for the first time, Saved By The Bell became my go-to show after school and on weekends when there would be day-long marathons.

There are so many things to love about this show. I’ve made a brief top 10 of the best things about Bayside High:
SBTB51. The fashion, which I’m sure was super on trend, is actually amazing in 2015 and I would genuinely consider wearing some of those outfits.

2. It’s comedy, which was aiming for kids and teens, is a little bit more adult than I could ever realize when I was simply 9 years old.SBTB Gif13. The boys… Most young girls were finding it difficult to choose between Zack and A.C. Slater, I was too busy laughing at geeky Screech!

4. The theme song! When you hear that bell ring you can’t help but sing along!

SBTB75. Zack & Kelly, a love story to rival that of Romeo & Juliet, Ross & Rachel, Britney & Justin.

6. When things got real. Back then, the really controversial episodes didn’t air on Nickelodeon, but they actually tackled some really relevant teen dramas, such as drinking and drug abuse. OK, so it was caffeine pills, but still!

SBTB Gif7. The dancing. Due to some of the actors’ strong dancing abilities, they always found a way to incorporate it into story lines, leaving us with the sickest dance moves you’d expect to find in 1991!

8. The behind the scenes DRAMA! Last week I watched the Lifetime Original Movie based on all the backstage beef between the main cast. Although I’m not sure how much of it is true, one thing’s for sure: everybody hates Screech!

SBTB Gif29. The Reunions! Anytime you get to see 2 or more of the cast together, it brings warm, fuzzy feelings into your heart. Earlier this year, Jimmy Fallon brought 4 of the 6 original cast members onto his show for a comedy sketch. Lark Voorhies who plays Lisa was unavailable and Dustin Diamond (Screech), well, see above!

10. The movies, spin-offs and special episodes! Even though The College Years was technically a failure for the franchise, I was really into it! Not to mention the Hawaiian & Las Vegas movies…

SBTB Gif3Saved By The Bell was revolutionary at the time, as it was the first sitcom aimed at kids, starring kids. It had a shaky start, and was cancelled more than once, but eventually it found its footing and paved the way for shows like Kenan & Kel, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Hannah Montana and That’s So Raven. But above all else, it was just a great show about ordinary teenagers going through the growing pains of high school. Something that everyone can relate to even today… Except for their cellphones being the size of my house.

#ManCrushMonday: Chris Pratt

Chris Pratt launches #ManCrushMonday on Pink Suburbia

EsoZ3JJ
Husbands look away! It’s time to launch #ManCrushMonday on Pink Suburbia! For my first #MCM, I wanted to set things off with a man who ticks all of the boxes. After a long, hard think (and an extensive google images search, of course), I came to the not-so-difficult conclusion. Guardian of the Galaxy (and my heart), CHRIS PRATT!

Here are my reasons why:

Reason 1: He’s Handsome (DUH!)

chris-pratt-06-GQ-USA-july-2015-by-peggy-sirota-1Let’s start with the obvious one shall we? Yes, Chris Pratt is a looker. There’s something about him, he has a bit of that old Hollywood, leading man charm. classically handsome, muscles in all the right places, and he knows how to smize (Smile with his eyes, for anyone who’s not aware of the terminology!).

Guys want to be him, girls want to be with him (and some guys too!), so he’s physically appealing to everyone in some way!

Reason 2: He Used To Be a Fatty

63560524279906046141124772_0708-pratt-landscape-1Not too long ago, when Chris looked in the mirror, he didn’t see those guns and pecs and abs. It was all man-boobs and beer-belly. If you watched him on Parks & Recreation, you’d never imagine he would one day become the action star he is now.

That’s not to say he was unattractive! I thought he was a cutie even with the extra pudge! Even his wife, Scary Movie’s Anna Faris preferred him when he had a little bit more meat on his bones. But his transformation has done wonders for his career, so I don’t see him going back to his chubby ways anytime soon.

Reason 3: He’s Funny

Chris-Pratt-Entertainment-Weekly-Pool-Photo-Shoot-002The main reason why he’s my crush is not just because of his looks (although he’s gorgeous, so it’s a big part of it!). As well as being insanely handsome, he’s got a great personality to match and his comedic timing is always on point. Whether it be scripted or improvised, if it’s comedy you’re after he’s the man to deliver it.

I’m a big fan of his improvised lines on Parks, especially because he has a dirty sense of humour that I can appreciate. If you want to see his inappropriate jokes, check out some bloopers on YouTube. I found this one quite amusing (although very naughty!).

Fun Facts About Chris Pratt

Chris Pratt1

  • Chris’ big break came when he was discovered in a shrimp restaurant in Hawaii where he worked as a waiter.
  • Before he was discovered, he went through some hard times, and was actually living in a van with Scooby-Doo painted on the side. Random!
  • Before marrying Anna Faris, he was involved with none other than Emily Thorne from Revenge (real name Emily VanCamp)
  • Chris and Anna grew up in the same city, twenty minutes away from each other, but only met when they starred in a movie together in 2009.
  • While trying to get a genuine reaction from Amy Poehler in an episode of Parks, Pratt got completely naked in front of her. NBC sent him a letter reprimanding him for his actions (which he now has framed in his office). Just one more reason to love him!

If for some strange, inexcusable reason you still aren’t convinced, Just watch this gif on loop for 5 minutes until you change your mind:

5 Shows That Received No Love In The UK!

These great US TV show’s deserve a second chance!

In this day and age, thanks to the power of the internet, it’s very easy to watch anything online. But that doesn’t mean to say that there isn’t a market for watching television shows on an actual telly! These are some shows that have been really successful online and on Netflix, but weren’t given the proper treatment they deserved on UK broadcasters:

1 Once Upon a Time

Once Upon a TimeOK, so I only really became interested when my husband told me that Elsa was going to be in ‘Once Upon a Time’ in its fourth season. (We went through a Frozen phase, just like all 5 year old girls!) Up until then I had heard a little bit about it, but never gave it a second thought. But my curiosity grew and we decided to give it a go, and within a few hours, an instant obsession was born!

It’s campy, retelling of Disney classics is surprisingly captivating, and it’s twists on old stories make it far more entertaining than it receives credit for. Roni loves Emma, the reluctant saviour of the fictional town Storybrooke, while my heart belongs to the evil queen (I’m always drawn to the villains!).

I later found out that it had been airing on Channel 5 for its first 2 seasons, but was ultimately dropped and left in television limbo. Luckily, earlier this year it was picked up by Netflix, and new episodes air just a couple of days after the US! Season 5 starts in September so make sure to catch up on all the spell-binding action before then!

2 Supernatural

SupernaturalThis one has been played around so much, I don’t even know where to start. In the beginning of it’s run, the first few seasons were on ITV2, then it moved to LivingTV, which was later rebranded as Sky Living, and then it finally made it’s way to E4 in January of this year. Due to all of it’s movements and indecipherable premiere date pattern, This show definitely lost momentum somewhere along the way. Which is a complete shame, because I actually started watching this in 2012 when I bought seasons 1-6 on DVD (just before it started it’s 7th season). As much as I loved the show, I found it really hard to catch up on all the seasons, and at this point, it’s about to start it’s 11th and I am a couple of years behind!

Dean and Sam are demon-hunting brothers, who travel the US solving supernatural cases. The premise is simple, but the brotherly chemistry between Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki is really heartwarming. The soppy melodrama mixed in with action, suspense, horror and comedy make this a great show to watch! At this point, I have no idea where you can watch it in the UK, but definitely try to catch up online. (I know I will!)

3 Breaking Bad

Breaking BadSay his name. Heisenberg. How the hell did Walter White get such a raw deal in the UK? This is a show that I actually discovered shortly after it finished in 2013, so we were able to binge watch it in all its glory! Breaking Bad, the story of a chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with stage four cancer and turns to cooking meth to pay his medical bills, has been voted best TV show ever God knows how many times! It’s critical acclaim is phenomenal, and it’s become a worldwide sensation.

But it definitely suffered from a slow start here in the UK. It’s first two seasons were broadcast on Five USA and FX, but it was dropped from both channels because of low ratings (how is that possible?). But not to fear, because through it’s impressive DVD sales and Netflix streams it gained popularity and has even found a new home on Spike, where ALL it’s seasons are being broadcast for the first time!

4 Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little LiarsIt’s Desperate Housewives meets I Know What You Did Last Summer meets Gossip Girl, but it’s addictive teen drama at it’s best. I got into this as soon as it started airing in the US by watching it online. The show follows the lives of the four ‘liars’, a group of teenage girls who each has a life full of secrets and lies, whilst being harassed by the mysterious cyberbully ‘A’.

With the success of Gossip Girl and 90210 here in the UK, it’s a wonder why this wasn’t immediately picked up by big channels like E4 or ITV2, especially because it was an instant hit on ABC Family in the US. It aired in the UK on MTV for its first two seasons in 2011, but was soon dropped and never returned to UK TV. Once again, Netflix came to the rescue and all 6 seasons can now be watched, and each new episode is available the day after the US.

5 RuPaul’s Drag Race

RuPaulDrag, sweat and tears are the key ingredients for this reality show competition, presented by the most famous drag queen of all, RuPaul. It’s a mash up of America’s Next Top Model and Project Runway, with a lip-sync battle thrown in for good measure. Great challenges, celebrity judges and bitchy drag queens make Drag Race truly must watch television. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and is a guilty pleasure for anyone who enjoys campy fun.

To be fair, this is a show that I don’t think fits on any channel in the UK, but E4 did air the first two seasons (even though I never saw any kind of promotion for it). It did become a surprise hit on Netflix (which is where I randomly came across it) and this year, TruTV acquired the rights to air seasons 4 onwards, as well as airing Untucked, its behind the scenes companion show. TruTV actually put some money into promoting the show, as I remember seeing RuPaul on the side of a few double-decker buses on a regular basis. And they even launched a nationwide campaign to find RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Ambassador, a British drag queen who will represent the show in the UK. Finally, some justice for Mama Ru!

TVThese are just a few of the great US shows that unfortunately didn’t quite take off here in the UK. Maybe the timing was wrong, or maybe there just wasn’t enough promotion to let people know about these shows, or maybe the public just weren’t that into it. Whatever the case, I’m just glad that the majority of these shows have been given a second chance at life, and have actually gone on to be quite successful.
