#ManCrushMonday: Nick Jonas

I’ve been waiting patiently for Monday to come around, so I can share my crush with the world! This week’s title goes to Nick Jonas! Singer, actor, underwear model (not really, but he should be!), and an all around hot piece.

I’ve been exposed to the Jonas Brothers since their rise to fame on the Disney Channel. My sister has always been a devoted fan of the JoBros, and I ended up becoming quite fond of them. Joe Jonas was always my favourite, I wanted to have his hair and his clothes (now I wouldn’t go anywhere near his 2008 wardrobe!). But in the last year or so, it’s the youngest of the trio that has been catching my eye.

Little curly haired, mild-mannered Nick Jonas has transformed into a beefy, sexy, R&B crooner. Who would have imagined!? Gone are the days of purity rings and Disney love songs. These have been replaced by half-naked photoshoots and sexy falsettos.

Nick Jonas has well and truly distanced himself from his former band and brothers, and has established himself as a successful solo act. Some people have criticized his blatant pandering to his homosexual fans, but I think it’s great that a straight male celebrity is tapping into the market, no matter how shamelessly he does it! His now-infamous spread for Flaunt magazine definitely serves as a highlight from his sexually charged campaign!

I was lucky enough to get tickets to his album launch in the UK back in July, where he performed at the very cosy O2 Academy in Islington. I was one or two rows from the front of the stage, and he is even more stunning up close! My husband promised me that if he managed to touch Nick he would never wash his hand again, but sadly, we weren’t within groping distance! It should also be noted that Nick is a very talented musician and songwriter, and is always actively involved with the production of his albums.

With his new single ‘Levels’ out now, and two hit TV series currently airing (Scream Queens and Kingdom), it’s hard to avoid seeing or listening to the young performer. And when he looks and sounds this good, why the hell would you want to!?

Fun Facts About Nick Jonas

  • Nick was discovered at the age of six in a barber shop while his mother was getting a haircut.
  • He can do one-handed cartwheels.
  • He has been romantically linked to Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and… Delta Goodrem? Random!
  • A die-hard fan adopted a hippo in the name of the Jonas Brothers.
  • When he was 13 years old he released an album of Christian songs.

9 Best Girl-bands of The 90’s/00’s

Just like every little girl and boy (at least the gay ones) in the 90’s, I grew up listening to a lot of girl-centric pop music. And while Britney Spears was my main object of affection, I had a lot of time for girl-bands too! With Natasha Hamilton from Atomic Kitten recently taking part on Celebrity Big Brother in the UK (she was robbed of the crown and came third!), nostalgia has hit me hard, and thanks to Apple Music, I was able to dig up the classics! In no particular order, here are some of my favourite girl-bands from the nineties and early noughties:

1 Spice Girls

I couldn’t start this list with any other band. The Spice Girls are the epitome of 90’s girl-bands. Without them paving the way, I’m not sure if some of the other acts from the list would have ever existed. Five loud and lairy Brit’s, a handful of well-chosen nicknames, and that union jack dress, put it all together and what do you get? Possibly one of the greatest girl-bands of all time.

2 Girls Aloud

Spice Girls may be the most successful British girl-band worldwide, but Girls Aloud hold that title in the UK, as well as being the biggest selling girl-group of the 21st century. Wow! Girls Aloud have made a huge impact on British pop music, with even more ‘credible’ musicians such as Chris Martin from Coldplay showering them with praises. Their innovative pop catalogue was mostly helmed by production team Xenomania, who forged a unique sound for the girls. After a long hiatus they returned in 2012 with a greatest hits collection and tour, only to take it all away and announce their split a few months later! Why, Cheryl, Why?!

3 Atomic Kitten

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Whole Again is a musical masterpiece! Atomic Kitten came onto the British pop scene at an awkward time, post-Spice Girls’ “Girl Power” reign where every girl-band was made up of feminists and Pre-Girls Aloud’s slightly edgier, moody-teenage-girl-angst phase, which meant they were both dated and ahead of their time for falling somewhere in the middle. But that didn’t stop Atomic Kitten from eventually becoming very successful and scoring 3 UK #No.1’s! Plus, The Tide Is High was in the Lizzie McGuire Movie, and there really is no higher honour than that.

4 Sugababes

Initially Sugababes were basically the anti-Atomic Kitten. Their focus on vocal harmonies and R&B influences made them the ugly step sisters of British girl-bands! After a change in the line-up (the first of many), Heidi Range replaced Siobhan Donaghy, and what ensued was an endless stream of pop classics. with the release of Freak Like Me the band were awarded their first number one and continued to go from strength to strength. Unfortunately, after two more line-up changes, Sugababes simply disappeared one day, with none of its original members still standing and no proper send off. At least we’ll always have the music!

Just this morning, thanks to my new playlist, I was seen driving down the motorway, singing No Scrubs at the top of my voice. When I was growing up I wasn’t really cool enough to be listening to TLC, so I only discovered them a little bit later in my tween years. Their slick Hip-Hop/R&B gems like Waterfalls, Unpretty and Creep have stood the test of time and continue to attract new audiences. It’s a shame that band member Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes died so suddenly, arguably at the band’s peak, as I’m sure they would have continued to have great success thanks to her talent.

6 Destiny’s Child

A.K.A. Beyoncé’s Child, Beyoncé and her back-up singers, Just Beyoncé, and Who Are Those Other Two?. Yes, It’s hard to believe that Beyoncé ever allowed herself to share the spotlight with anyone else, but Destiny’s Child is her origin story (along with Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams of course). DC were a force to be reckoned with on the R&B girl-band front, despite their line-up changes and dominant lead singer. Their greatest hits features songs like Survivor, Say My Name and Independent Women, but my sister and I have recently become obsessed with Jumpin’ Jumpin’ (mostly because of my rendition of Beyoncé’s ‘B-B-Balla-Balla’ adlibs).

7 Daphne & Celeste

Please tell me you remember this? Girl-bands are a guilty pleasure in their own right, but Daphne & Celeste are a guilty pleasure within a guilty pleasure (is this making sense?). With songs like U.G.L.Y., School’s Out, and the lyrical genius Ooh! Stick You (to this day I still don’t know what this song is about), they were cheesier than a chunk of brie, and I loved it! Daphne & Celeste were a flash in the pan, blink-and-you-miss-it affair, but ‘up your butt with coconut’ will live on forever.

8 The Pussycat Dolls

Just when I thought that girl-bands were a dying, washed-up breed, The Pussycat Dolls came along to revive my faith in humanity! OK, slightly exaggerated, but PCD were the best thing to happen to the almost-extinct format. Super hot, stripper-looking dancers, with naughty-ish lyrics and a hip-hop flare. What’s not to love? The group disbanded in 2010, mostly because of interior squabbles and Nicole Scherzinger’s power play to be leader of the dollhouse. I’m sure it all ended when Nicole sang ‘Don’t cha wish you had as many lines as me?’

9 The Saturdays

The latest addition to this list, and a band that is still technically active (although currently on a hiatus), is The Saturdays. Back in 2008 I saw The Saturdays open for The Jonas Brothers, and instantly took a liking to the song Issues. At the time, a modern reminder of girl-bands past, I remember thinking they would be the next big thing! Sadly, I don’t think they ever really took off, but they have made some damn good pop music and have been consistently hard-working (even with babies, husbands and boyfriends getting in the way!).

And there you have it! Nowadays bands like these are hard to come by, which is a real shame, but just goes to show how great the nineties/noughties really were! The torch has been passed on to the likes of Little Mix and Fifth Harmony, who are the only currently successful, active girl-bands of our time. They have big (platform) shoes to fill, but hopefully they can keep the fire alive until the next generation is ready to take over one day, if that day should come!

5 Must Watch New TV Shows!

TV Shows 1

The American fall TV season is about to start and I couldn’t be more excited! Apart from returning hits from last year (Empire, How to Get Away With Murder, Jane The Virgin etc.), there are a few new shows that have already started generating buzz and interest, so I thought it would be good to round-up the 5 I’m most looking forward to!

1 Supergirl

I’ve been excited about this show since it was announced, not only because I am a huuuge Superman fan (and genuinely enjoyed the ill-received 80’s Supergirl film), but because it was developed by the man behind Arrow and The Flash, Greg Berlanti. I think I’ve briefly mentioned this before, but I’ve already seen the pilot for Supergirl, when it leaked online a few months ago, and I have to say it has a lot of potential! Melissa Benoist is so captivating and lovable that she is a perfect fit for the role of Kara, and the plot seeds that have been planted in the pilot could possibly developed into great television. I think it might struggle to find a balance between appealing to both male and female audiences, but I’m interested to see how they attempt it.

2 Scream Queens

Scream Queens

Since Ryan Murphy first announced the idea/concept behind it, I’ve been obsessed with Scream Queens. It’s been described as a horror-comedy hybrid, and the first season revolves around a series of sorority house murders. With every casting announcement my anticipation increased, with the likes of Emma Roberts, Ariana Grande and Nick Jonas all set to star in the anthology series. I’m a big fan of all things Ryan Murphy puts his finger on, and this is practically guaranteed to be my campy fun guilty pleasure! Scream Queens premiered last night, so when I get home from work later today I will be catching up!

3 The Real O’Neals

The real Oneals

Unfortunately this show doesn’t have a premiere date yet, which isn’t good news! But after watching the teaser trailer I became really interested in watching this. Similar to some of ABC’s hit family sitcoms like Modern Family and The Middle, The Real O’Neals focuses on a conventional Catholic family whose world is turned upside down by the revelation that one of the sons is gay. Like the straw that broke the camel’s back, this secret causes repercussions for the whole family, and truths long hidden finally start revealing themselves. The first trailer looks like a lot of fun and the cast is really strong, it’d be a shame if this show sat in limbo for too long!

4 Heroes Reborn

Heroes Reborn

This one is cheating a little, because I don’t know if I’d classify it as a new show, but it’s 2015 and Heroes is back on my screen so I have to make a point of it! 5 years ago, The original Heroes series was cancelled after a steady decline in ratings and quality. Luckily for us, Heroes was resurrected! Heroes Reborn has been teased for what feels like forever, so I can’t wait to see what has been going on in this show’s universe for the last five years! Although it features a (mostly) all-new cast, some of the originals do return, and I’m optimistic that it is coming back to redeem itself!

5 Blindspot

I have to admit I don’t know too much about Blindspot, other than the fact that it started this week and I need to catch up! What I do know is that the main plot involves a woman being found naked in the middle of Time Square, with no memories and her body covered in tattoos. The tattoos offer clues for unsolved crimes and this Jane Doe is somehow connected. I love a good mystery show and the tattoo clues remind me a little bit of Prison Break, so I’m hopeful that I can get into it.

eating popcorn

These are just some of the fifty-odd shows that will be premiering within the new television season! Some will go on to be successful, some will be taken out back and shot in the head. That’s just the name of the game! But for now, let’s focus on giving these newbies a chance! Sit back, relax and just enjoy getting hooked on these exciting new stories.

Yes image grey

I have always been the kind of person to play it safe. Apart from a wild first year of university, I’ve always preferred a night in with a good box set to a night of going out out. Which is fine, it’s just the way I am, and for the most part I’m completely fine with that!

Spongebob tv

However, I feel like if I try branching out and trying new things and taking people up on offers I would normally say no to, I may have more to say and more adventures to look back on. So, I’ve become a Yes Man! Just like the cringey Jim Carrey film, I’ve started saying yes when my first instinct is to say no. I won’t do anything illegal or too dangerous, but it’s good to get out of my comfort zone!

Last night my best friend Ollie invited me and Roni out to a bar where he knows the bartender. He guaranteed me a night of free drinks (which is very hard to resist!), but I was still a bit reluctant. I’d worked a full day and Roni has work early this morning, so I was very hesitant. But then I remembered that I’m a Yes Man now,  so we went for it!

lindsay yesWe ended up having a really good time! Drinks were indeed free all night (my glass was always full), the music was on point (they even played some Britney Spears!), and I was in great company with my husband and my best friend!

I know that for some people this may not seem like such a big achievement, but I can often find a million and one reasons to avoid leaving the house even if I know I’ll end up enjoying myself. I’m just really chilled out and like to be at home (my life goal is to be a househusband!). I’m glad that I reconsidered, and saying yes actually felt fantastic!

yes loop

Going out last night was my thing that I needed to say yes to. Yours may be different. Maybe it’s a new relationship, or a new job. Maybe it’s forgiveness that you need to embrace. Maybe you need to accept help if you are in a difficult situation. Whatever you are saying no to, perhaps you should reconsider! I know I won’t be like Jim Carrey, and there will be things I do say no to, but a few more yeses in life can be a good thing!

If It Doesn’t Challenge You, It Doesn’t Change You

I’ve been having a really busy week with work, and unfortunately my blog has suffered because of it. Although this is something that was started as a hobby, I am very devoted to it and like to set apart some time to write. I make a point of it, actually. Even though I am still very busy, today I sat down to write, and it’s been a bit of a struggle! I have a few blog post ideas but the creativity for piecing it together just isn’t there right now.

While searching for some motivation, I googled ‘Inspirational Quotes’. Just goes to show you how desperate I was because I’ve never used Google as a life guru! Somewhere in the middle of the sappy, cliché and overused quotes, this one popped out for me:

It may not catch your attention, but today I think it’s what I needed to see. It’s so easy to give up on what we want when we are faced with our first hurdle. I’ve never really tried to pursue writing or put it out there for people to see because I was scared of a moment like this. A moment when I feel like I’ve used up all my creativity and I need to go back to my day job and forget about my passion.

When I started writing again after so many years of frustrated, creative build up, I broke a cycle. I challenged myself and I changed. I don’t want to give up on something that I enjoy doing and is actually a huge accomplishment for me. It’s changing me for the better!

Whatever your hurdle is, no matter how hard it may seem to overcome, the thing is to just power through and not lose steam! You might fall over on the first one, lose your balance on the second, or even flat out land on your face on the third, but who knows, maybe by the fourth you’ll have found your footing.

Encouraging Thunder Award! – Why Do I Blog?

I’ve been nominated for an Encouraging Thunder Award. Find out why I blog…

encouraging thunder PSthank you so muchMy first nomination for a blogging award! Where is my acceptance speech that I have been secretly writing for the last month? (I mustn’t forget to start an argument with Miley Cyrus!)

I’ve been nominated for an Encouraging Thunder Award, and it’s a way of letting your followers know why you blog.

Thank You…

First of all, Thank you Morgan for the nomination, I’m a big fan of your blog and it was lovely to read about your inspirations for blogging. Please make sure you read her blog @ The Secret Diaries of a Computer Science Student.

Why I Blog…

typingWhen I started this, it was a creative output for me to talk about my life and my hobbies, and what it’s like to be a young, married gay man living in suburban England. I have always felt a little bit like an outsider and was hoping to be able to share my experiences and interests with like-minded people.

But what I discovered was that blogging is not just about what you put out, but what you take in from this fantastic community! I have LOVED discovering new and exciting blogs! Which is very surprising to me because I thought it would be like Facebook, where people share too much and I just roll my eyes and continue scrolling. But it’s fascinating to see so many others sharing a part of themselves so publicly. It pushes and inspires me to be more honest in my writing and with myself, to try and understand who I am a little bit more.

I am very new to all this, and I’m still finding a balance between sharing my personal side and commenting on popular culture. It can be scary to write about such personal things, but I am treating my blog like a diary and would like to be as candid as I would be if I were the only person reading it (which I might be!). It can actually be quite therapeutic to be so open! Hopefully people are enjoying my stories and opinions, and can relate to some of my experiences!

I Nominate…
